REVIEWS:

I originally bought the paperback version of this book in March of 1998, after stumbling upon it at a Barnes & Noble store in Augusta Georgia and it was like a dream come true for me. I have been a fan of SCTV since catching a few of their syndicated show (primarily seasons 2 & 3) on the St. Louis PBS affiliate KETC Channel 9 in 1980. When NBC picked up the show and expanded it to 90 minutes on Friday, May 15, 1981, there I was camped out in front of the TV, recording the audio track on cassette tape. I had never seen anything like that on television before and was definitely hooked on this show for life. I was never really a fan of "Saturday Night Live", although I later found out that Lorne Michaels poached quite a few Second City performers for the show. And don't get me started on "Fridays"! I taped almost every episode of SCTV on NBC until 1983, when NBC cancelled SCTV to free up the timeslot for "Friday Night Videos".

What you get in this extraordinary book is the definitive history of the cast, writers, producers, makeup-hair and wardrobe technicians & production team of SCTV, as well as the creative forces that took an idea from Del Close (the world's smallest and cheapest television station) and created one of THE best cast driven television shows to ever come out of Canada. Author Dave Thomas was there from the beginning and has given us this fantastic record of the show that launched the careers of John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis and Martin Short, as well as his own.

i just bought the Hardcover version of this book because, as you can imagine, my original paperback copy was seen a lot of wear and tear in 22 years.

WELCOME

Some people know Dave Thomas from the sketch show "SCTV" that launched the careers of John Candy, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara, Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy and Rick Moranis.  Some people know Dave Thomas from the TV show "Arrested Development" or the movie "Rat Race." Some people know Dave Thomas from the nineties ABC sitcom "Grace Under Fire". Most people don't know Dave Thomas was also one of the Writer / Producers for Fox's TV show "Bones" or ABC's "The Blacklist".  Or that he acted alongside Henry Fonda, Jonathan Winters, John Cleese, Richard Pryor, Zach Galifiankis, Whoopi Goldberg, Mary Louise Parker and Ashton Kutcher.  Or that he co-created ABC's "America's Funniest People" with Vin Di Bona. Or that he directed John Travolta, Jean Stapleton and Max Von Sydow in theatrical motion pictures for Paramount and MGM. Or that he created a game show called "Family Challenge" that ran for 144 episodes on ABC and Family Channel. Or that he wrote "Spies Like Us" with Dan Aykroyd.  Or that he founded an animation company in 2001 called Animax. The fact is, Dave loves TV and he's produced, directed, written or starred in every type of television except news.

Dave Thomas and Road to Perdition creator Max Allan Collins have co-written an exciting, innovative thriller: THE MANY LIVES OF JIMMY LEIGHTON, in which smalltime Boston thief Jimmy Leighton stumbles into a perilous quantum experiment – and a bullet – propelling him down the multiple paths his life might have taken. The novel will be published digitally by publisher NeoText and include a print edition as well.

Jimmy Leighton has only two things going for him – his bad boy skills and a good woman’s love. In debt to a Vietnamese mob boss, Jimmy needs a score, and hits a nondescript house with a high-tech laboratory tucked away in the basement. With no idea what he’s looking at, Jimmy accidentally activates a quantum machine and is simultaneously shot by another intruder, sending him two places at once – a Boston hospital in a coma, and a Chicago penthouse apartment in another version of his life.

The petty crook has inadvertently become the guinea pig of MIT physicist Dr. Neil Goldman, whose research into the Many Worlds Theory opens a multi-dimensional portal of possibilities. Before Jimmy can adjust to his new life as a rich man in Chicago, he finds himself in a boxing ring being pummeled by a formidable opponent. Unable to control these transitions, Jimmy hops from one version of his life to another, each becoming more challenging and dangerous than the last.

Concurrently, Cambridge detectives Sam Neer and Taylor Farr – a crusty Black cop uncomfortably paired with a young female partner – remain in Jimmy’s original world, trying to solve the mystery of who shot the little thief from Southie. Their investigation draws them into the treacherous worlds of Boston crime and industrial espionage.

In December 2022, Ted Sarandos, confirmed that Netflix still plans to air this special that was shot four years ago in New York and Toronto.
